The year 1917 saw the introduction of the Shimmy, a type of dance which stressed the back and forth movement of the shoulders while the rest of the body remained still. The dance became very popular in the 1920s and was often performed by Flapper girls. There were numerous variations of this new dance and music sheets from around the world celebrated it's many forms.

Beginning around the year 1900 the world of sheet music got a colorful makeover. From the beautiful lithographs which graced the covers of many sheets published by E.T. Paull to the stylized art deco designs in use by the 1920s, the graphics depicted on the covers of song sheets were beginning to achieve an equal importance to the music itself. This blog will explore the many different designs and graphics used in the early 1900s in order to convey a musical idea to a populace that was beginning to see the light in relation to visual and musical expression. It was a time period in which music never looked so good.
